DESCRIPTION:Educator\, historian\, and writer Amy Cohen learned most of the material covered in her new book Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape through teaching it.  Ms Cohen’s presentation will include an overview of the book with more detailed insight into her Black History teaching experience in Philadelphia’s public school system.  In 2005\, the Philadelphia School Reform Commission unanimously passed a mandate making African-American history a graduation requirement. This decision was groundbreaking. Ms Cohen volunteered to be one of the first teachers applying the new curriculum. \nAfter twenty years teaching social studies\, she became Director of Education for History Making Productions and is a contributing writer for Hidden City Philadelphia. \nCopies of Black History in the Philadelphia Landscape will be available for purchase. \nThe event is free and open to the public.
